The inaugural CityX Expo in September 2018 showcased innovative companies working on products and services that improve urban living. The event shone a light on three key areas for future cities — adaptability, breathability and mobility. Over the four days of CityX, we had more than 260 companies at the Urban Innovation Centre in London – 38 of which exhibited, and many others that took part in panel sessions and presentations.

The Urban Innovation Centre in Clerkenwell is the home of Future Cities Catapult and a space for urban innovators to work together.

The main challenge in this project was to create a strong brand for the event around the central theme of urban innovation. The identity was built around a singular motif, an arrow pointing to the future, signalling control of man, machine and transport. Three days, three themes, three colours and three textures defined the visual environment, reflecting ideas of mobility, adaptability and breathability.

The environment design was sensitive to the existing building fabric, including an eight meter steel wall, various surfaces, video and interactive installations across three floors. Bespoke way finding that worked in tandem with the existing building signage was also required to guide delegates.
